Pff! I'll believe that chanting can alter genes when I see it. This is a condition of the brain I am talking about.

Obviously that does not apply to your brain. Please ignore his posts: they are frequently meaningless. No offence, rohwl. I just don't think that this forum is suited to you.

If I ever get cancer I'll show you that I can beat it with chanting! grin

What were you talking about a brain condition?

Well, the impossibilities of your brain communicating with a cancerous tumour aside, that has nothing to do with chemical imbalances or hormonal overloads. Apart from anything else, most people who use violence as means of getting anything view your way of life as weak. If you approach a street thug kicking the metaphorical 'crap' out of someone else, and tell them to sit down and meditate and think about how what they are doing is wrong, they would laugh at you. In fact, they'd probably start kicking you instead. I'm not trying to insult you, I'm telling you what they'd do -- I didn't go to the 'best' primary school, because we moved to the area too late and I had to settle for the only one with a place available. I know these people. If it's 'hard', it's cool. If it isn't 'hard', it's for 'pussies'.

And then there's this key factor: someone with a mental condition severe enough to cause them to inflict pain on others, possibly for fun, isn't likely to sit down and meditate even if you could get them to stop laughing. It's not in their nature to do so, I'm afraid.

yes, yes I've heard all this before, and I know what you're saying, it isn't like a live in a condition completely free of violence and cynicism. As narrow as that point of view is, nothing I can say will change your mind, so I refuse to debate that.

I don't fear those who use violence, they are the ones that hold fear very close to their heart.

I sincerely hope you'd change your stance on violence should a need to defend yourself arise, or this forum could end up short of an admin.

heh, the loss of a forum admin vs the belief of the innatety of buddhahood in all life.

I have a different take on the way people act and why. I believe in everyone's happiness and so don't want to encourage violence in myself or others. I will encounter hostility and violence(in different forms) toward myself in this lifetime perhaps because of my ideals. But I don't fear such attacks, as they are natural parts of our human society, and I will do my part to encourage others out of their own unique suffering, and seek an understandable and fulfilling perspective on life.

You probably can't understand how or why I believe this, but you can ask and question!(please, heheh) grin

Err.. I only read the first post (gotta get ready for class)

The logging industry isnt as bad as people make it out to be. They replace twice as many trees as they cut down. And sure it takes awhile for them to grow, but they are constantly being renewed.

So it's OK for them to wipe out rainforest millions fo years old and force species to extinction?

In the Amazon 80% of logging is for farming purposes. They don't replant trees in their cattle grazing lands, or do they grow them somewhere else?

I wouldn't be suprised if that statistic that twice as many trees are replanted is just made up by the people who profit from logging. Ayway, the rainforests have taken thousands and tousands of years to reach that stage. We'll have to wait that long again before the replanted trees are the same as the originals.

Perhaps those statistics are true, in a certain area. But even so in areas like the Amazon, the devastation is immense. Even if trees are replanted somewhere else, the Amazon itself suffers.

Quite. Hundreds of species are wiped out everyday in the Amazon.
