I think we're convicting criminals based on our current understanding of best practice. We've mostly decided that it's not OK to beat our children any more, for instance, even though it says "spare the rod and spoil the child" in the bible. The Bible - being the enigmatic document that it is - could mean any number of things by that, but we've mostly decided that it probably doesn't mean we should beat our children with a stick, and even if it does, we don't agree (mostly).

We don't chop people's heads off and display them in the town centres anymore, either. In many places we no longer kill murderers at all. We still agree that it's wrong to kill other people (unless we declare war on them), but not because of cavemen (who possibly didn't have much of a problem with murder for all we know). We believe it's wrong to take another's life because it causes so much pain to everyone involved.

I believe our society will outgrow it's fear of death, generally, but it's not for us to say when another should die, particularly when many people believe that life on this plane is all we have...

I agree that indeed it seems, especially in light of the so called "war on terror" that morals are merely a bendable, figment of our minds, and that are not a constant of our humanity.
Of course, laws and ethics have ben created by humans largely as a result of complex society, but there are basic instincts that can develop into more complicated ideology. For example, in the animal kingdom you will not see a lion randomly murder another lion in it's pride. There is a sense of togetherness and family, even in the animal world. This example is very basic, but it is an example of some basic instincts that our morals stem from.
I suppose animals are not a great example for they live a limited existence, in that, their minds are less developed that ours. I am a firm believer that this sense of togetherness or compassion is innate to all of us, and further more, dormant within our lives is infinite wisdom, compassion and happiness that filters into our actions.
Humanity in its 'strongest sense' is not about greed, self-righteousness, anger or animality; it is caring about confidence, happiness, initiative and strength in your life and in others'. When you have a firm belief in the potential for other people, and take on the responsibility for your life and your relationships, then you don't feel the need to re-assert your own status or image, whereby killing, thieving etc stems from.
So, I agree that there is no such thing as ethics in the strictest sense, and you see often that peoples lives become clouded with this, and supress what is true to all of humanity; wisdom.

Actually, going very deep discussion will reveals as the part that there is nothing like good and bad. Just all are the doings done by us. But we are the only living beings having the sixth sense, so that we must do as that it will joy for us...........................
