The American Culture?
Post by Lusive33 on Jun 13th, 2004, 9:18pm

Lots of people think that Americans have no culture...if someone asked you if america has a culture or not, what would you say??

America has many different cultures. India, African American, and many man others. The American culture we see the most, however, is the crass one portrayed in 90% of hollywood movies, the insular "God bless america" type things, overly patriotic and arrogant.
But, of course most Americans aren't like this at all.

How do you know Torrich. Would you care to elaborate?

I'm assuming. Just like all Australians aren't cork-hat-wearing bush people with kangeroos for pets.

Anyway, none of the Americans I've known are like that. That was a really stupid thing to write, Tim.

*sigh*
I wanted to know if you had anything to say in addition. The American people I've met aren't like that either, I wasn't implying anything, just to know where you were coming from.

Hi there...
You're talking about culture, right ? Funny... I'm French and I'm in the USA, Illinois, now. I arrived 1 month ago and I'm going to stay for 10 months.
Before coming, I thought itr would be very hard to stay here because of what I knew about it (from all the prejudices I heard in France). But It's great ! And I agree with u, they are defenitly a lots of american cultures... I suppose it must be like that in such a big country.

I would initially talk before I had chance to think, and say that, to the outside observer, American culture isn't much more than a combination of primarily European cultures, with some other more exotic cultures thrown in, and then their own brand of greed, patriotism and possibly some mild xenophobia in a lot of people thrown into the mix.
Then I would consider the two American girls I knew in high school, and the American guy I met a few times, and how they were normal people who were no different from anyone else here. Though I suppose they could have been hiding their patriotism and mild xenophobia, I suppose. The greed is common in most Western countries, and some Eastern ones too, so that wasn't surprising. It just seems more developed in America. The number of times you're likely to get sued, for example, in America is probably higher than anywhere else on the planet though I don't have any figures to back that up. So after I'd swallowed my own foot, I would say that I don't really know. As I'm not entirely sure how you would define my own culture. And if Americans are like us, then I can't define theirs either.

Hi, all.
A few months ago I returned from United States where I stayed for 4 and a half months. I think that americans are more possitive persons, in comparison to europeans. "Make it easier, no stress, feel free and good to be yourself and be nice to people" are the things that describe US and americans to me.
