xx What's your opinion about personhood?
« Thread started on: Aug 9th, 2006, 1:09pm »

What do you think are the characteristics that makes us different from other animals?

And when do you think it begins? (e.g. at conception, implantation.. etc..)

This is actually connected to an abortion project that I'm doing, and some opinions would be nice since there are so many convincing points of view all over the net, that it's difficult to really make up my mind.

PS: This is also an ethical issue, but I decided to start this thread in this section anyways.

well it's kinda difficult to talk about it from a non-scientific background. tongue
But isn't there a point when the conscious mind kicks in or something when in the womb.?
As to when the human mind as opposed to the animal mind starts I have no idea. I don't think it is like a change in consciousness though, just perhaps using more of the brain and so having more awareness of self eventually.

I think that's slightly simplistic. But it depends on what you think personhood is. Consciousness of self is one point that is included as a possible sign of personhood, but chimpanzees have this characteristic as well. So what makes us different from other animals?

Lol. Quite possibly. But there's more to it than just consciousness.
- self-awareness (already mentioned)
- a sense of time (the past, present, and future)
- the capability of relating with others
- communication
- changeability
- rationality
- learning from experience
- discriminating between what's important and what's irrelevant to the situation at hand
- creating new ideas (by combining old ideas)
- ability to plan ahead
- setting and pursuing goal

However no one can always meet these points at all times. So what is personhood?

Some might argue, and might be able to prove that animals can achieve a few if not most of the things you mention at given times.
Personhood is probably what you make of it. So much of our actions are based on animal instincts and sub-consciousness, we mightn't be all that different, just with more intelligence.

True. But we've lost most of our animal instinct. And it depends on what you think intelligence includes.

I don't think we can be compared to animals. Now I'm a happy agnostic, so I don't subscribe to the 'Jesus thing', but we were clearly created, along with everything that is, was, or ever will be. The difference once sees when comparing humans to animals is the presence of a tiny portion of divine wisdom, given to us by our unknowable God, quite simply, to make things more interesting. I believe we cannot fully utilize this wisdom with our puny human minds, but we do alright for ourselves. This is why we're zipping around the universe exploring other worlds and littering the cosmos with space junk, while monkeys are still trying to open nuts with rocks. Any corelation mankind makes between our two species for the arguement that we emerged from the same point of origin is complete and total absurdity.

There must be some reason, something that started the development of our intelligent minds. Probably the fear of death, so we can survive. But why did it evolve as far as this? We are way past dominating other animals and we are definately using this skill wrong. I believe the reason we are intelligent is so that we can tame the same predators that bring fear in us, tame them to eat things that do not feel fear. The only reason we have a mind is after all, to guide our bodies through this world.

What differentiates us? That humans are not happy to maintain a simple way of life like the rest of the animal kingdom. We need to build skyscrapers and apartment complexes. We have to breed our food. We have to be above the others. Blah blah blah. It's like humans are the competitive species. Wanting to be in control. It's a false sense of "we are better" or "above" the rest of the animal kingdom. Truth of the matter is, our only difference is that we strive to be different. We search and experiment and whatever else to advance beyond all other animals. I don't think it's so much a matter of our intellect being advanced as it is our focus. The others of the animal kingdom might be just as intelligent, only they focus theirs on other things in life whereas our focus is getting ahead in our own self-created world.

In a religious point of view, personhood begins in our premortal existence, when we already ARE.

In a non-religious way, its a state or condition of being an individual person.
